december morning

Let's grease the wheels over tea,
let's discuss things in confidence,
let's be outspoken, let's be ridiculous,
let's solve the world's problems.

Since everything is but an apparition,
perfect in being what it is,
having nothing to do with good or bad,
acceptance or rejection,
one may well burst out in laughter.

"The great source of both the misery and disorders of human life, seems to arise from over-rating the difference between one permanent situation and another… Some of those situations may, no doubt, deserve to be preferred to others; but none of the can deserve to be pursued with that passionate ardor which drives us to violate the rules either of prudence or of justice; or to corrupt the future tranquility of our minds, either by shame from the remembrance of our own folly, or by remorse from the horror of our own injustice.”

-Adam Smith, The Theory of Moral Sentiments, 1759

I love Christmas lights. It is so pretty to look down the street and see all the houses twinkling. I hope we can decorate and put up the tree this weekend, I'm ready for some holiday happiness.

God Says Yes To Me

december morning
I asked God if it was okay to be melodramatic

and she said yes

I asked her if it was okay to be short

and she said it sure is

I asked her if I could wear nail polish

or not wear nail polish

and she said honey

she calls me that sometimes

she said you can do just exactly what you want to

Thanks God I said

And is it even okay if I don't paragraph

my letters

Sweetcakes God said

who knows where she picked that up

what I'm telling you is

Yes Yes Yes.

-Kaylin Haught (from The Palm of your Hand, 1995 )

december morning
When things go wrong as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And if you want to smile but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit-
Rest if you must, but don't quit.

Life is strange with twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns
And many a fellow turns about
When he might have won had he stuck it out.
Don't give up though the pace seems slow-
You may succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than
It seems to a fair and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up
When he might have captured the victor's cup,
And he learned too late when the night came down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure inside out-
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt.
And you never can tell how close you are,
it may be near when it seems afar.
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit-
it's when things seem worst that you mustn't quit.
